Build and edify closely identify God working in us to will and to do His good pleasure. We build up ourselves and one another and edify ourselves and one another through prayer, fasting and participating in the Lord’s Supper. Those lead us to maturity as we grow up into Christ the head of His body.
Jesus said: Mat 16:18
And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build oikodomeō my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
We build and edify when we pray.
When we pray to God our Father we do it with assurance that He loves us. He has poured his love into our hearts. He has made us holy in his sight by the blood of the Lamb. So, we come to our Father God knowing that He has made us accepted the Beloved. We come in love, thanksgiving, worship and praise, looking forward to spending eternity with God in His presence. We set our minds on Jesus our Good Shepherd who knows us by name. We pray primarily for those we personally know: ourselves, our spouse, our children, our one another community and our neighbors. We also pray for the worldwide community of our King—Jesus, and our government leaders.
In nothing be anxious; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. Php 4:6
We pray in faith, being sure of things not seen. We don’t see Jesus but we know Him by His Spirit with us, the Holy Spirit. When we pray in the Spirit we fix our eyes on God our Father and Christ Jesus His Son seated at His right hand. When we’re praying in the Spirit building ourselves up the most holy faith. We don’t understand the words that were saying yet we get a drift of what it is. His Spirit leads us to pray in accord with what God wants. Since we are not praying with our understanding, the Holy Spirit helps us pray God wants us to pray even though we don’t understand the verbiage of what we are saying. The Holy Spirit builds us up in our spirit our faith is built up as Jude encouraged.
But ye, beloved, remember ye the words which have been spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; That they said to you, In the last time there shall be mockers, walking after their own ungodly lusts. These are they who make separations, sensual, having not the Spirit. But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. And on some have mercy, who are in doubt; and some save, snatching them out of the fire; and on some have mercy with fear; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh. Jude 1:17-23
In the Lord’s Supper setting, Paul exhorted:
Follow after love; yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts , but rather that ye may prophesy. For he that speaketh in a tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God; for no man understandeth; but in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men edification, and exhortation, and consolation. He that speaketh in a tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. Now I would have you all speak with tongues, but rather that ye should prophesy: and greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. 1 Cor 14:1-5
I thank God, I speak with tongues more than you all: howbeit in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue. 1 Cor 14:18-19
We fast to sharpen up our spiritual senses by humbling our body.
Our body is saying eat food while our spirit is saying eat what comes from God. Eat and digest the word of God, the wisdom of God and the love of God. We come closer to God and more effective at walking in the way of the Lord. We love God more deeply and gain confidence and sureness in God. Faith works by love so when we encounter a situation in which only God can help, we rely completely on Him. He works in our hearts and what we speak we say and what we do brings forth the power of God working in us.
In order to sharpen up in the spirit and really understand what God was presenting the followers of Jesus often fasted before making any important decisions especially in laying hands on someone and setting them into the service of God. Then they were sharp in the spirit and could discern and flow the gifts of the Spirit. They understood what God was working in their midst and they went for it. Link to fast, fasting, fasted
We build and edify when we participate in the Lord’s Supper.
The Lord’s Supper is the prophetic sign of the new covenant we celebrate in remembrance of Jesus.
We come to the Lord’s Supper clean and pure as we remember all that Jesus has done for us. He laid down his life for us. His body was beaten and His blood was shed in our behalf. By His sacrifice, we were made saints, God’s holy ones. God has made us right with Himself and He requires us to be right with one another.
And if thy brother sin against thee, go, show him his fault between thee and him alone: if he hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. But if he hear thee not, take with thee one or two more, that at the mouth of two witnesses or three every word may be established. And if he refuse to hear them, tell it unto the church: and if he refuse to hear the church also, let him be unto thee as the Gentile and the publican. Verily I say unto you, what things soever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and what things soever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
Again I say unto you, that if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father who is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. Mt 18:15-20 ASV
When we join together with followers of Jesus that we know and love in thought, word and deed, celebration of the Lord’s Supper creates an environment of sharing. We don’t break bread with just anybody. Breaking of bread is a solemn sign a fellowship and we don’t have any fellowship with darkness or with those walking in darkness.
And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the apostles with him. And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: for I say unto you, I shall not eat it, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. And he received a cup, and when he had given thanks, he said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: for I say unto you, I shall not drink from henceforth of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come. And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave to them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. And the cup in like manner after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood, even that which is poured out for you. Luke 22:14-20 ASV
We recognize Jesus is with us by His Spirit us as we celebrate the Lord’s Supper. In that setting, Paul taught how to build and edify one another in 1 Corinthians chapters 10 thru 14.
