Amorality Erodes Civility because it lacks moral restraints. Amoral behavior began becoming socially acceptable in America in the late 1940’s. We do not have to look far to see the extremes to which is now has gone.
Amoral people determine for themselves what is right in their own eyes and claim their right to speak and act with no moral restraint.
Roots of amoral erosion of civility go back to the fall of Adam and Eve. The primary cause of amorality is rebellion against God and the desire to be god unto self.
Civility in America began to seriously erode after the second world war. In the 1940’s, it was not socially acceptable to violate godly speech or conduct. Even unbelievers recognized sin was sin. Even-though they practiced sinful speech and conduct, they didn’t flaunt it in the presence of people they recognized as believers in God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ.
Godly conduct is essential to civility. Jesus is our example. He didn’t judge people, destining them to hell. Jesus did speak the truth in love pointing conduct worthy of God as well as sinful conduct.
1. …not involving questions of right or wrong; without moral quality; neither moral nor immoral. 2. having no moral standards, restraints, or principles; unaware of or indifferent to questions of right or wrong: a completely amoral person. Link
Definition of Civility
My Bible based definition of civility is to be kind, considerate and courteous, to give honor to whom honer is due, to love one another, to speak the truth in love, to love our enemies, to protect civility.
Roots of amorality—erosion of civility beginning with the enlightenment.
The Enlightenment ushered in “Liberal Christianity” in which amoral theologians put their own human reason above Scripture and God. It’s proponents believed the changes it would bring would be the future of the Christian church.
The Enlightenment ushered in liberalism, communism and socialism. Karl Marx, born 200 years ago (1818–1883), was a product of the enlightenment. He was a pagan, and is typically cited as one of the principal architects of modern social science and socialism. He co-authored The Communist Manifesto in 1848 and is where we get the terms Marxist and Marxism.
Socialism is a range of economic and social systems characterised by social ownership and democratic control of the means of production as well as the political theories and movements associated with them.
Secular humanism is another product of the enlightenment. It began in the late 1800’s.
Secular humanism is a philosophy or life stance that embraces human reason, ethics, social justice, and philosophical naturalism while specifically rejecting religious dogma, supernaturalism, pseudoscience, and superstition as the basis of morality and decision making.
Secular humanism posits that human beings are capable of being ethical and moral without religion or a god.
By their enlightenment, liberals identify themselves as heathens, or as they prefer, secular. Heathens have no God in this world. What they won’t admit is we who follow Jesus have a spirit to spirit relationship with God, not just a religion.
14But the unbeliever does not welcome what comes from God’s Spirit, because it is foolishness to him; he is not able to understand it since it is evaluated spiritually. 15The spiritual person, however, can evaluate everything, yet he himself cannot be evaluated by anyone. 16For
- who has known the Lord’s mind,
- that he may instruct Him?
But we have the mind of Christ. 1 Corinthians 2:14-16 HCSB cf. 1 Cor 1; 2.
I don’t know what religion Obama identifies with, but as a Democrat presidential candidate, he was derisive of Christians.
On April 6, 2008 Obama had a fundraiser in San Francisco. To these receptive democrats, he said:
And it’s not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations. Link
Obama made a problematic judgment call in trying to explain working class culture to a much wealthier audience. He described blue collar Pennsylvanians with a series of what in the eyes of Californians might be considered pure negatives: guns, clinging to religion, antipathy, xenophobia.
There he presented his own antipathy to people not like him.
Antipathy is a voluntary or involuntary dislike for something or somebody, the opposite of sympathy. Xenophobia is the fear and distrust of that which is perceived to be foreign or strange, particularly opposition to foreign culture.
It is true that Christians distrust liberals. For, liberals in their amoral pride consider themselves big enough to accommodate any persuasion, EXCEPT faith in God our Father and His Son Jesus Christ.
James succinctly contrasts the uncivility of amoral wisdom with the civility of wisdom from above.
3Who is wise and has understanding among you? He should show his works by good conduct with wisdom’s gentleness. 14But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your heart, don’t brag and deny the truth. 15Such wisdom does not come from above but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16For where envy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every kind of evil. 17But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peace-loving, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, without favoritism and hypocrisy. 18And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who cultivate peace. James 3:13-18 HCSB
