Conformed and Not Conformed

God predestined us to be conformed to the image of his Son—to bear the likeness of His Son and be non-conformed to the world.

Conformed to the image of God’s Son

In the same way, the Spirit also helps us in our weakness, since we do not know how to pray as we should. But the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans too deep for words, and the one who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, for the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to God’s will. And we know that for those who love God, that is, for those who are called according to his purpose, all things are working together for good.

For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that the Sons might be the firstborn among many brothers (brethren – brothers and sisters). And those whom he predestined, he also called; and those whom he called, he also justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified. Romans 8:26-30 ISV

Being conformed to the image of God’s Son, bearing His likeness, is a continuing growth process God pre-destined. We grow up as we apply the faith God gives us and the grace Messiah gives us. “Until we attain mature adulthood and the full standard of development in the Messiah” as we “grow up completely and become one with the head, that is, one with the Messiah.” “As each individual part does its job, the body builds itself up in love.”

“And it is he who gifted some to be apostles, others to be prophets, others to be evangelists, and still others to be pastors and teachers, to equip the saints, to do the work of ministry, and to build up the body of the Messiah until all of us are united in the faith and in the full knowledge of God’s Son, and until we attain mature adulthood and the full standard of development in the Messiah. Then we will no longer be little children, tossed like waves and blown about by every wind of doctrine, by people’s trickery, or by clever strategies that would lead us astray. Instead, by speaking the truth in love, we will grow up completely and become one with the head, that is, one with the Messiah, in whom the whole body is united and held together by every ligament with which it is supplied. As each individual part does its job, the body builds itself up in love. Ephesians 4:11-16 ISV

“And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. 2 Corinthians 3:18 ESV

“And have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. Colossians 3:10

Not conformed

“do not be conformed to this world.” “do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance.”

“Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:1-2

“Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, “YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY.” 1 Peter 1:13-16 NASB

We are not to be conformed to Political Correctness, which is conformed to this world. We are to be non-conformists to Political Correctness in our churches and in society. As “we grow up completely and become one with the head, that is, one with the Messiah… Then we will no longer be little children, tossed like waves and blown about by every wind of doctrine, by people’s trickery, or by clever strategies that would lead us astray.
