Good Pleasure of Goodness and Work of Faith

Good pleasure of goodness and work of faith are the two things Paul prayed God to fulfill in His people. That gives us more understanding of what he meant by good works.

for which also we do pray always for you, that our God may count you worthy of the calling, and may fulfil all the good pleasure of goodness, and the work of the faith in power, that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and Lord Jesus Christ.2 Thessalonians 1:1-12 YLT

For we are his workmanship, created in Messiah Yeshua for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them. Ephesians 2:10

Messiah Jesus, in His parable and teaching of the vine and the branches, explained how that is fulfilled.

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the farmer. 2  Every branch in me that doesn’t bear fruit, he takes away. Every branch that bears fruit, he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3  You are already pruned clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4  Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch can’t bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you, unless you remain in me. 5  I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6  If a man doesn’t remain in me, he is thrown out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them, throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7  If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, you will ask whatever you desire, and it will be done for you.’

8  “In this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; and so you will be my disciples. 9  Even as the Father has loved me, I also have loved you. Remain in my love. 10  If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, even as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. 11  I have spoken these things to you, that my joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be made full. John 15:1-11 (John 3:1-21)

Messiah Jesus says, remain in Me and I in you. We do that by His Spirit in us.

9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if it is so that the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if any man doesn’t have the Spirit of Messiah, he is not his. 10 If Messiah is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of him who raised up Yeshua from the dead dwells in you, he who raised up Messiah Yeshua from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.

12 So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. 13 For if you live after the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are children of God. 15 For you didn’t receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, “Abba!† Father!” Romans 8:9-15

The life of the vine flows through us by the Spirit helping us be life giving fruit bearing branches. We bear this fruit in our attitudes, words and actions motivated by the love God pours into our hearts by His good pleasure and by the Spirit (Ro 5:1-5).

Goodness is a fruit of the Spirit that is vital in kingdom relationships. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Messiah have crucified the flesh with its passions and lusts.

If we live by the Spirit, let’s also walk by the Spirit. Let’s not become conceited, provoking one another, and envying one another.” Galatians 5:22-25

When we walk by the Spirit, we walk worthily of the calling with which we were called, bearing the fruit of the Spirit, which is seen in our attitudes and actions in the body of Christ.

1 I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to walk worthily of the calling with which you were called, 2 with all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, even as you also were called in one hope of your calling, 5 one Lord, one faith, one immersion, 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in us all. 7 But to each one of us, the grace was given according to the measure of the gift of Messiah. Ephesians 4:1-7 (Eph 4:8-24)

God fulfills the good pleasure of goodness and work of faith in and through us as we look forward to the resurrection of life (Jn 5:29) and eternal life God with us in the new heaven and new earth (Rev 21:1-2 )

10 when He may come to be glorified in his saints, and to be wondered at in all those believing—because our testimony was believed among you—in that day; 11 for which also we do pray always for you, that our God may count you worthy of the calling, and may fulfil all the good pleasure of goodness, and the work of the faith in power, 12 that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Thessalonians 1:10-12 YLT
