Close relating was once the norm in the Messiah’s body. Messiah’s followers were family, friends and neighbors. They often gathered for a meal or for the Lord’s Supper in each other’s homes. They were face to face across the table and spoke highly of the Messiah with one an other, shared their lives, hugged and prayed for one another.
They lived as a people whom God has called.
So I, a prisoner in the Lord, urge you to live as people whom God has called. Be humble, and gentle in every way, be patient, and lovingly bear with one another. Ephesians 4:1-2 AAT
Harmonious one another relating strengthened by the Spirit.
“3 being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, even as you also were called in one hope of your calling, 5 one Lord, one faith, one immersion, 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in us all. Ephesians 4:3-6
The exaltation and reign of Messiah
7 But to each one of us, the grace was given according to the measure of the gift of Messiah. 8 Therefore he says,
“When he ascended on high, (Eph 1:22-23)
he led captivity captive, (Eph 4:9-10)
and gave gifts to people.” Ephesians 4:7-8 (Psalm 68:18; Eph 4:11)
Psalm 68:18. Thou hast ascended on high, to the height, referred by Paul to the ascension of Christ, Eph 4:8; for the Champion of His Church, having overcome all His enemies, now gives visible evidence of His victory by ascending in triumph to heaven; Thou hast led captivity captive, Satan and his hosts, who formerly held all mankind captive, now himself being bound with everlasting chains of darkness. Thou hast received gifts for men, among men, consisting of men, the reference being to the fact that the exalted Christ has chosen certain members of the human race as His own, men who are now subject to Him in the obedience of faith; yea, for the rebellious also, for even such as were formerly rebellious, unwilling to submit to the gentle rule of Messiah, are finally overcome by His mercy, that the Lord God might dwell among them, establishing His Church among the Gentiles also. For this establishment of the Messianic kingdom the psalmist now gives praise.
The fact that the Lord is represented as blessing His people, as imparting spiritual benefits also to the heathen, a standing characteristic of Messianic prophecy, and the trend of the psalm must be admitted without question. Kretzmann
Messiah gave us spiritually gifted people help us grow up relating right in his body, the body of Christ/Messiah, the church.
Ephesians 4:9 Now what does this “he went up” mean except that he also had gone down into the lower parts of the earth? 10The one who went down is the same one who went up above all the heavens so that all things would be fulfilled.
11And it is he who gifted some to be apostles, others to be prophets, others to be evangelists, and still others to be pastors and teachers, 12to equip/perfect the saints, to do the work of ministry, and to build up the body of the Messiah 13until all of us are united in the faith and in the full knowledge of God’s Son, and until we attain mature adulthood and the full standard of development in the Messiah.14Then we will no longer be little children, tossed like waves and blown about by every wind of doctrine, by people’s trickery, or by clever strategies that would lead us astray. 15Instead, by speaking the truth in love, we will grow up completely and become one with the head, that is, one with the Messiah, 16in whom the whole body is united and held together by every ligament with which it is supplied. As each individual part does its job, the body builds itself up in love. Ephesians 4:9-16 ISV
Put on the new man.
Ephesians 4:17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind, 18 being darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardening of their hearts. 19 They, having become callous, gave themselves up to lust, to work all uncleanness with greediness. 20 But you didn’t learn Messiah that way, 21 if indeed you heard him and were taught in him, even as truth is in Yeshua: 22 that you put away, as concerning your former way of life, the old man that grows corrupt after the lusts of deceit, 23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and put on the new man, who in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of truth.
Live as people whom God has called.
Ephesians 4:25 Therefore, putting away falsehood, speak truth each one with his neighbor, for we are members of one another. 26 “Be angry, and don’t sin.”✡ Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath, 27 and don’t give place† to the devil. 28 Let him who stole steal no more; but rather let him labor, producing with his hands something that is good, that he may have something to give to him who has need. 29 Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but only what is good for building others up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear. 30 Don’t grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander be put away from you, with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Messiah forgave you.
