Thinking on the things of God builds us up in our faith. In Messiah Jesus, God created His people of faith (Eph 2:10). He made us a new order of creation, one new man (Eph 2:1), quite different from His old covenant people and from pagans. He created us as thinking beings to be to His glory (Eph 1:2): new creatures (2 Cor 5:17), born again by the Spirit (Jn 3:3-7), regenerated (Titus 3:4-7) as spirit, soul and body (1 Th 5:23), unlike unregenerate humanity consisting of body and soul.
God blessed us with every spiritual blessing in heavenly places in Messiah Jesus (Eph 1:3). He made us holy by the blood of Jesus for the remission of sins (Eph 1:7). “In him you also, having heard the word of the truth, the Good News of your salvation—in whom, having also believed, you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is a pledge of our inheritance, to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of his glory. He placed us with Messiah Jesus in heaven” (Eph 1:13-14). He rescued us from the tyranny of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of His Son (Col 1:9-14). God gave us the living Word (John 1:1-5) and the written Word (2 Tim 3:16-17) and the Spirit (Acts 2) to help us grow up in all ways in Messiah (Eph 4:11-17).
Messiah Jesus made us a Kingdom of priests to God his Father (Rev 1:4-6) and members of his body and puts us to work as working parts of his body (Eph 4:11-17). He leads us as the Good Shepherd and we hear his voice (Jn 1:1-18). Thus, we are the unique community of the King.
That’s just a brief overview of the blessings in which we thrive as thinking beings.
Paul urges us how to live as thinking creatures.
4 Rejoice in the Lord always! Again I will say, “Rejoice!” 5 Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand. 6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Messiah Yeshua.
8 Finally, brothers (and sisters), whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report: if there is any virtue and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 Do the things which you learned, received, heard, and saw in me, and the God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4:4-9
Thinking about those things with Scripture.
True “If you remain in my word, then you are truly my disciples. 32 You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” John 8:31-32
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on, you know him and have seen him.” John 14:6-7 (John 17:11-18)
Put on the new man 17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles (Pagans) also walk, in the futility of their mind, 18 being darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardening of their hearts. 19 They, having become callous, gave themselves up to lust, to work all uncleanness with greediness. 20 But you didn’t learn Messiah that way, 21 if indeed you heard him and were taught in him, even as truth is in Yeshua: 22 that you put away, as concerning your former way of life, the old man that grows corrupt after the lusts of deceit, 23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and put on the new man, who in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of truth. Ephesians 4:17-24 (John 17:11-18) That’s true thinking.
Honorable Having regard for honorable things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men. 2 Cor 8:21 (Ro 12:17)
Just Our righteousness is God’s covenant justice 16 He (John the Baptist) will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. 17 He will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to prepare a people prepared for the Lord.” Luke 1:16-17
Of good report 11 Beloved, don’t imitate that which is evil, but that which is good. He who does good is of God. He who does evil hasn’t seen God. 12 Demetrius has the testimony of all, and of the truth itself; yes, we also testify, and you know that our testimony is true. 3 John 1:11-12
Lovely How lovely on the mountains Are the feet of him who brings good news, Who announces peace And brings good news of happiness, Who announces salvation, And says to Zion, “Your God reigns!” Isaiah 52:7
Virtue-goodness 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Messiah have crucified the flesh with its passions and lusts.
25 If we live by the Spirit, let’s also walk by the Spirit. 26 Let’s not become conceited, provoking one another, and envying one another. Galatians 5:22-26
Worthy of praise 3We are bound to always give thanks to God for you, brothers (and sisters), even as it is appropriate, because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of each and every one of you toward one another abounds, 4 so that we ourselves boast about you in the assemblies of God for your perseverance and faith in all your persecutions and in the afflictions which you endure. 5 This is an obvious sign of the righteous judgment of God, to the end that you may be counted worthy of God’s Kingdom, for which you also suffer. 2 Thessalonians 1:3-5
9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, that you may proclaim the excellence of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 In the past, you were not a people, but now are God’s people, who had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
11 Beloved, I beg you as foreigners and pilgrims to abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul, 12 having good behavior among the nations, so in that of which they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good works and glorify God in the day of visitation. 1 Peter 2:9-12
Pure Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Matthew 5:8
