Teaching, reproof, correction and training in right living is vital to growing up in all ways into Messiah, relating in koinonia and becoming useful and productive in the body of Messiah.
“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, showing what is wrong, improving and training in right living so that a man of God is ready and equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17 AAT
“Let us tell the truth with love and in every way grow up into Him who is the head—Christ. He makes the whole body fit together, unites it by every contact with its support, and to the extent that each part is working He makes the body grow and builds it up in love.” Ephesians 4:16 AAT
Teaching, reproof, correction and training in right living in love starts at home.
Most of my training in the way of the Lord came from my parents as it did from Lois and Eunice for Timothy.
3 I thank God, whom I serve as my forefathers did, with a pure conscience. How unceasing is my memory of you in my petitions, night and day 4 longing to see you, remembering your tears, that I may be filled with joy; 5 having been reminded of the sincere faith that is in you, which lived first in your grandmother Lois, and your mother Eunice, and, I am persuaded, in you also. 2 Tim 1:3-5
From infancy, you have known the holy Scriptures which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith, which is in Messiah Yeshua. 2 Tim 3:15
From my observations, the vast majority of believers came to Christ by believing the gospel their parents taught them in word and deed. Most received love with teaching, reproval of wrong doing, correction of error, and instruction in right living from their parents.
I was blessed to be raised by a godly father and mother. While babies in diapers, they gave us plenty of tender love and care. From infancy, they gently but firmly taught Scripture to me, and my brother and sisters as soon as we could understand. They taught by word and example, not only to trust God for eternal salvation (Eph 2:1-10) but also how to grow up in Christ. The gave us just the right amount of teaching, reproof, correction and training on how to live right. We came to God in fear, love and trust, honored our parents, helped one another, thrived in our family relationships and lived worthy of the Lord.
My father and mother were full of love, kind and peaceful. They followed Paul’s instruction. “You fathers, don’t provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord’ (Eph 6:4).
All of us learned many of the Proverbs, including Proverbs 22.
- 1 A good name is more desirable than great riches,
- and loving favor is better than silver and gold.
- 2 The rich and the poor have this in common:
- The LORD is the maker of them all.
- 3 A prudent man sees danger and hides himself;
- but the simple pass on, and suffer for it.
- 4 The result of humility and the fear of the LORD
- is wealth, honor, and life.
- 5 Thorns and snares are in the path of the wicked:
- whoever guards his soul stays from them.
- 6 Train up a child in the way he should go,
- and when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:1-6
Through family, Messiah Jesus and the Holy Spirit led us to know God our Father and helped us be faithful and loyal to God and one another. From my earliest recollection, I remember the joy of family and the joy of the Lord. When singing a hymn of worship to God our Father or Jesus our Savior joy would well up in my heart and spirit. Even though I didn’t recognize this as participating in the kingdom of God until later, it was. I highly value that rich heritage through which I learned the culture of the kingdom.
For the Kingdom of God does not consist of eating and drinking, but of right conduct, peace and joy, through the Holy Spirit; and whoever in this way devotedly serves Christ, God takes pleasure in him, and men highly commend him. Ro 14:17-18 WNT
